Tori Tsui joins a line up of North West Business Leaders who are asking, if inaction of business is leading us to early deaths, does that count as Corporate Manslaughter?
Tori Tsui, John Robb, Francesca Kennedy Wallbank and Ngunan Adamu are some of the first wave of Speakers who will talk about turning ideas into action for a ‘better business’ future at the second ever Better Business Summit.
They will be joined by Patagonia, Faith in Nature, Eden Communities and the Royal Association for Deaf People at Manchester Met University.
The Better Business Summit will be held on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th January 2024 at the University, followed by an optional nature based day on Friday 19th. Tickets can be bought here.
The event will discuss innovative new ideas and approaches and how we can create systemic change through collective action, education and support across four lecture halls, networking sessions and exhibition spaces.
The theme for 2024 is Radical Utopia: centred around the idea that the ingredients of a better society are already present within human nature.
The conference features a keynote conversation from Tori Tsui, a climate activist, writer and mental health advocate from Hong Kong, based in the UK. She was named one of Stella McCartney’s agents of change and was subsequently sponsored by McCartney to sail across the Atlantic Ocean to COP25. In Nov 2021, Tori was invited by Emma Watson to speak at the New York Times Climate Hub, alongside Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai. She has also featured in Billie Eilish’s Overheated documentary
The day will be hosted by BBC radio presenter and social entrepreneur Ngunan Adamu, as well as John Robb, Journalist and Musician who is launching the Green Britain Academy with Dale Vince, to help support the creation of 700,000 new green jobs in the UK by 2030.
According to YouGov around half of the UK public (51%) believe individuals can make a big difference in the fight to save the planet. But how many Businesses are actually willing to do something to help them?
The event will be held at MMU’s Business School, in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. It will see more than 350 attendees gather to hear from 100+ speakers across panel discussions, workshops, keynote speeches including a second stage that builds on Manchester’s history of radicalism, by prompting a number of thought-provoking questions and peer to peer catalyst conversations attendees can get involved in.
This event is for business owners who envision a world where all businesses are a force for good, advocating for sustainability, government support and creating regenerative practices and contributing to a better world.
Partnering with the Royal Association for Deaf People, the Better Business Summit also wants to highlight the inaccessibility for Deaf people to business events.
One in five adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus and by 2035, the Royal Association for Deaf People estimate there’ll be around 14.2 million adults with hearing loss greater than 25 dB HL across the UK. Yet despite the Government passing the BSL law in 2022 the deaf community continue to face difficulties in the workplace.
The Better Business Summit is the brainchild of Hannah Cox, founder of The Better Business Network and Audience Behaviour Consultant at betternotstop.
Organiser Hannah Cox said: “Our first ever Summit was completely sold out. Over 35% of the audience posted about what an incredible time they had so we knew we had to bring it back in 2024. We thrive on bringing together some of the most future thinking ideas and concepts in business.
Some of this year’s ideas are: “Should we reshape capitalism? Is Carbon Offsetting a necessary stop gap or part of the problem? and asking; If the inaction of business is leading us to early deaths, does that count as Corporate Manslaughter?”
These were all chosen by our amazing Summit Committee and really embed the message we made in our Manifesto last year
The fully accessible event will have 350 two-day tickets available as well as free places for students, and a bursary scheme for small business owners.
And organisers are expecting places to be snapped up.
Graeme Heyes at Manchester Met, said: “Through our initiatives such as the Manchester Fuel Innovation Centre, Print City Network and Eco-I programme, we are continuing to help businesses develop and evolve with the green future.
“Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Manchester Met. We regularly lead the People and Planet Green League and earn accolades for our initiatives, for example the Eco-I North West project which was recently crowned European SDG Initiative of the Year 2023. We are proud to host the Better Business Summit once again and are excited to hear the speakers, take part in the workshops and celebrate the achievements of the business community”.
Join hundreds of change-makers and innovators at the Better Business Summit and begin your year of action for people and the planet.
