Carbon Literate City

The Better Business Network (BBN) has partnered with The Carbon Literacy Project and Manchester City Council to help Manchester become the first Carbon Literate City.

The accreditation, will be a wide scale, encompassing people who live, work and study in Manchester. They collaborate on their Carbon Literacy journey with the aim of collectively achieving registered Carbon Literate Locality status for the city.

To achieve Carbon Literate City status, 15% of people (based on the Office for National Statistics population figure for the City of Manchester) must be formally certified as Carbon Literate. As of 2024: that’s 85,349 people in Manchester.

How far have we got?

Currently there are 12,779 people from 164 organisations across Manchester certified as Carbon Literate!

The BBN is proud to have contributed to those figures through it’s Carbon Literacy Course. 66.6% of our Members have had at least one person from their company go on to become Carbon Literate since they joined!

You can learn all about Carbon Literate Cities and see which other organisations have committed to supporting the effort here.
