Tentshare is an online platform that matches the tents in people’s homes with people who would like to camp but don’t own a tent. It’s estimated each year in the UK alone two hundred and fifty thousand tents go into landfill. Once a tent is purchased it is often used only once or twice a year by the owner. This means that there are millions of tents lying around in attics and garages across the UK, waiting to be used. Tentshare has been set up like a tent dating platform, we match these lonely tents with people who would like to camp. The tent owner gets to earn a bit of extra money, the camper has affordable access to camping equipment and the tent is being used. The positive knock-on effect is that fewer tents will need to be manufactured, reducing the strain on our planet’s resources. The best bit is that, instead of reducing our access to camping and the outdoors, we are gaining access to millions of tents and camping equipment. Sustainability is important to Tentshare for several reasons; for climate change, we need to stop taking more from our planet than it can regenerate. We currently plunder three or four times more than the planet can cope with. Sharing our stuff is a solution to this problem. Tentahre is creating a more equal playing field for all, renting an asset that is already in households to someone in the local community means that the money is staying within our local community. Purchasing a tent from a big business is sending our hard-earned money to the fat cats and shareholders. Plus, when we share our stuff, we can share our knowledge with each other, creating a like minded camping community.
